Ashtanga Yoga Centre
We are dedicated to teach the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method. Our shala in Fortitude Valley provides a friendly home for Beginner's and Advanced students to deepen their practice. We teach Mysore style classes, Ashtanga Yoga Beginner courses and Workshops. Once a month you find us mingling for breakfast in our leafy courtyard.

Our community is a fabulous bunch of dedicated practitioners and we invite you to join us on the mat. Ashtanga is much more than a form of exercise. Its a method designed to bring health to one's body and mind, to heal and prevent illness, to bring balance into our life. We are privileged to have access to these ancient teachings and honour our dedication with our daily practice.

Ash Hope
Report
I have been teaching the Ashtanga yoga system for over a decade and regularly study in India and with my teacher Nancy Gilgoff. Nancy was one of the pioneers of introducing Ashtanga yoga and Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois to the west in the 1970's. To appreciate the knowledge and experiences each senior teacher brings to the Ashtanga lineage, I have attended several teacher trainings with Manju Jois, Prem and Radha and David Swenson.
Ashtanga Yoga
Report
Ashtanga yoga is a traditional practice that cultivates and harnesses the healing power of synchronising breath with movement. Students practice a specific sequence of postures at their own pace, while the teacher offers one-on-one guidance and assistance to each student. Practicing in this way is called Mysore style and allows for students of all levels to practice together.
Invocation
Report
Ashtanga Yoga traditionally has both an opening chant and a closing chant. Because of Yoga's ancient roots, chants (or mantras) are offered in Sanskrit (the ancient language of India), however their meaning is said to be universal as Sanskrit is the language of the heart.

Studies have shown that when a person chants it can stabilise their heart rate, lower blood pressure, produce beneficial endorphins in the body and boost metabolic processes, so it perfectly compliments the physical practice of asana.
Moon Days
Report
Because human beings are 70% water, we are affected by the moon's gravitational pull at different times of the month. On full and new moon days it is advised to take rest from practice. Practicing asana and meditation over time makes us more attuned to these natural cycles. Full and New moon days are observed as yoga holidays in the Ashtanga Yoga tradition.
