Training opportunities are available for medical registrars, sports medicine fellows and UNSW medical students working on honours degrees or independent learning projects (ILPs). The ORI was established in 1988 and within a decade, became known as the premier orthopaedic research institute in the southern hemisphere.
The ORI has carried out large clinical outcomes studies comparing rotator cuff repair patients with controls. The ORI is conveniently located on the St George Hospital campus, just a short drive from Sydney's Mascot Airport and a seven minute walk from the Kogarah train station. Professor George AC Murrell specialises in shoulder surgery and has a special interest in arthroscopic methods to repair and restore damaged ligaments and tendons.
