I completed my medical degree at the University of NSW in 1986. After finishing the orthopaedic training scheme in Sydney in 1995, I continued my training overseas first at the Orthopaedic and Arthritic Hospital in Toronto, Canada and then at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London, England, where I held the Commonwealth Fellowship.
Knee
Report
The knee joint is more than a simple hinge joint. It is designed to carry much of the force of bending such as stair climbing and rising from a seated position. To understand the functions, conditions, surgeries & procedures of the knee, I have included an interactive animated presentation.

The joint surfaces where these three bones touch are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth substance that cushions the bones and enables them to move easily without friction. The joint is surrounded and enclosed by a thick ligamentous joint capsule. Inside this is a smooth tissue liner called the synovial membrane.
Knee Procedures
Report
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which a fibre-optic telescope is inserted into the joint. The anterior cruciate ligament is a thick rope like structure made from collagen that joins the femur to the tibia. A total knee replacement (TKR) or total knee arthroplasty is an operation to replace a knee joint that is affected by arthritis.
Hip
Report
The hip joint is the largest weight-bearing joint in the human body. It is also referred to as a ball and socket joint and is surrounded by muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The thigh bone or femur and the pelvis join to form the hip joint. Any injury or disease of the hip will adversely affect the joint's range of motion and ability to bear weight.
