In Queensland the Child Protection Act 1999 is the legal framework guiding Child Safety Services in child protection. These laws aim to protection children who have been harmed, or are at risk of harm. Child Support is the payment of money from one parent to another to assist with the ongoing financial costs associated with raising children post-separation. The Child Support Agency can determine an amount (if any) that is appropriate for payment depending on your circumstances. This is termed a Child Support Assessment.

It is also important to note that under section 4AA of the Family Law Act a court determining whether a de facto relationship exists is entitled to have regard to such matters, and to attach such weight to any matter, as may seem appropriate to the court in the circumstances of the case.
