Cat Vaccination
Report
Vaccination has revolutionised control of infectious disease in our pets. It is essential that all pets are adequately vaccinated to help protect the pet population as a whole. Responsible pet care requires kittens to be given their initial course of vaccinations, but this cannot protect them for the rest of their lives.
Intestinal Worms
Report
There are two broad categories of worms that may affect our pet dogs and cats, intestinal worms and heartworms. Worming is one of the first health care issues pet owners need to address as pups and kittens are the most susceptible. As their name suggests, intestinal worms are parasites that live inside your pet's intestines.
Heartworm
Report
There are two broad categories of worms that may affect our pet dogs and cats, heartworm and intestinal worms. Heartworm, or Dirofilaria immitis, is a parasite that is spread by mosquitoes, so your pet does not even need to be in contact with other pets to become infected! Heartworm has a complicated life cycle.
Ticks
Report
This is the most common external parasite we see on Broome dogs. Ticks come in different colours and sizes but are in fact all the same species of tick - the Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineous). The different appearance of the ticks relates to the life cycle stage (larval, nymph, adult) and the engorgement of the tick after feeding on the dog.
Fleas
Report
Fleas can be seen all year round in the hot climate of Broome. Only a small part of the adult flea population actually lives on your pet. In fact only 5% of the lifecylce is found on the dog or cat! The fleas' eggs and larvae live in the environment and can survive for up to a year, so it is important to not only treat your animal directly for fleas but also decontaminate the environment as well.
