Australia's Leading Brain Research Institute
The Florey is Australia's leading brain research institute, dedicated to advancing understanding of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Our mission focuses on translating scientific discoveries into improved health outcomes for the 5 million Australians affected by brain-related diseases. With over 50 research teams and 200+ active projects, we investigate conditions ranging from dementia and epilepsy to mental health disorders and stroke. Our work spans fundamental research, drug discovery, and clinical applications, supported by state-of-the-art facilities including advanced microscopy and neuroimaging technologies. We maintain NATA/ILAC-accredited diagnostic laboratories and collaborate with industry partners through our Florey Innovation initiative. Our researchers have made groundbreaking contributions in areas like Alzheimer's diagnostics, epilepsy treatment, and stroke rehabilitation. The institute fosters partnerships with First Nations communities and maintains a Victorian Brain Bank for critical research. Our Young Stroke Service addresses the specific needs of stroke survivors aged 18-55, while the Australian Epilepsy Project demonstrates our commitment to transforming patient care. With campuses in Parkville and Heidelberg, we combine academic excellence with practical solutions to improve lives affected by brain conditions.

Services
Dementia Research
Our dementia research investigates disease mechanisms, develops diagnostic tools, and tests potential treatments. We focus on early detection and intervention strategies using advanced imaging and biomarker analysis. Our work aims to improve quality of life for the 500,000 Australians living with dementia through better understanding of disease progression and development of targeted therapies.
Epilepsy Research
We conduct comprehensive epilepsy research spanning genetic factors, brain circuitry, and treatment development. Our Australian Epilepsy Project uses AI to improve diagnosis and treatment pathways. We've pioneered new therapies including experimental drugs that dramatically reduce seizures in severe cases, working towards better outcomes for the 250,000 Australians affected by epilepsy.
Stroke Rehabilitation
Our stroke research develops innovative rehabilitation approaches, including home-based personalised programs. The Young Stroke Service supports recovery for adults aged 18-55, addressing physical, cognitive, and emotional needs. We focus on improving outcomes for the 18 young Australians who experience stroke daily through tailored interventions and clinical trials.
Neuroimaging Services
We provide advanced MRI and microscopy facilities for brain research, including high-resolution neuroanatomical imaging and functional connectivity analysis. Our MRI-guided focused ultrasound technology enables precise brain targeting for research applications. These services support over 200 active research projects and are available to external collaborators through our scientific facilities program.
Clinical Trials
Neuroscience Trials Australia manages studies from early phase to phase IV trials, specialising in brain-related conditions. We coordinate multi-centre trials for new treatments in dementia, epilepsy, and stroke. Our trials program translates laboratory discoveries into clinical applications, with recent studies evaluating novel therapies for Alzheimer's disease and motor neurone disease.

Of all the neuroscience and mental health institutes I've been to in my life, this would be the best by far. Their staff are fantastic too, especially Leah who went above and beyond to make my visit an educational and intellectual adventure. Would come again.

I had the pleasure of meeting some of the lovely Florey staff at the Alzheimer's Australia Memory Run. Such a passionate and dedicated team. I was particularly impressed with the young lady (it was either Leigh or Leah) and her fundraising efforts, as well as her involvement in WISE. It is exemplary what Innovative and inspirational scientists this institute is producing.
