Fanny Filgate was an entrepreneurial businesswomen, and the eldest daughter of the founding father of the Clare township - Edward Burton Gleeson (Paddy Gleeson). Its purpose was to satisfy the thirst of local miners in South Australia. As the copper mining industry took off, so did Fanny's beer sales.

Knappstein works hard to ensure we achieve minimal impact on its surrounds whilst supporting sustainable practices at a viticultural, winery and office level. Extensive undervine mulching, the use of livestock for winter weed control, and the introduction of biological fungicides significantly reduces Knappstein's environmental footprint.
