I'm a photographer based in Sydney's Inner West. While I have always loved portraits, it was the arrival of my son that made me appreciate just how fun and rewarding family photography could be. He's now 10 and, along with his younger sister, remains my favourite - and at times most challenging - subject.

The portrait session was a fantastic experience. A family friend has taken some pictures for us since then but I never regained the feeling of freedom and self-discovering I enjoyed during the 'Ingrid-belly' session. We can never be grateful enough. All the feelings I wanted to remember are now in black and white forever.

My philosophy is to keep it simple - and natural. I try to be as flexible as possible and pride myself on creating a warm, friendly atmosphere that brings out the best in my portrait subjects, be they newborns or grannies. My home-studio in Lilyfield, Sydney. It's a spacious, light-filled setting with plenty of toys and music, ideal for a studio session, with an attractive garden (see pictures above).
What to wear / bring

Make sure you are comfortable. And if you have a 'look' of your own, you may want to stick with it (even if that contradicts what I've just said above). After all, it's about capturing the 'real you'. For family photos, it's good if everyone is wearing something similar, or at least similar colours.

We were so pleased with Tom's photos of our family. They made for a beautiful Christmas present for my in-laws. Some members of our family were traveling from the Blue Mountains and were quite stressed to be running so late to the session. Tom was very generous with his time and immediately put everyone at ease, which our beautiful photos reflect. Would highly recommend Tom to anyone and would use him again in the future.

Very happy with the whole process. Tom was really easy to work with and made the family photos shine. He made us feel at ease so our best shots could be captured. Even our 9mo was able to get some great shots with her extremely short attention span. We received lots of photos and choosing the ones to print out is proving to be difficult. Good problem to have.

We contacted Sydney Portraits (Tom) to take some family portraits after a previous bad experience. Tom took the time in advance of our photography session to understand what we styles we liked and were looking to achieve from our studio shoot. As a result we have some amazing photos of our family which get commented on all the time. My 12 month old was a little bit difficult at times, however this did not impact our photos. We selected the USB package which arrived quickly. We would recommend Sydney Portraits and will use Tom again, when we would like to update our family portraits.

Tom has photographed my family twice now and we have been very pleased with the results. Our last session was quite stressful for me and my husband with a tantrumming toddler and a baby. Tom remained calm and patient and tried numerous techniques to distract my children. He is a fantastic photographer as well as an approachable down to earth person making him perfect for any event...especially if kids are involved!
My husband also uses Tom now for his professional corporate photos and once again has been very happy with the results. Thank you Tom!

We have used Tom at Sydney Portraits twice now, the first time for some photos of our newborn in the studio, and the second time for some family photos on the beach.
Both times Tom was extremely good at getting us relaxed and having fun. He was also very patient with our child, even when she decided to take a nap half way through the shoot! We loved all the photos and would definitely recommend him any time. We will be calling him again in the future for our next set of family pictures!

My 20 month old son and I recently had a photo session with Tom, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. He created a very relaxing atmosphere that you'd almost forget he was there. We are very happy with the photos that Tom took of my son, and I, and he promptly processed them and forwarded us a disc. I would highly recommend Tom for a photo session with your loved ones.

Tom was fantastic with our 7 month old who was definitely a little skeptical at first! His warm, calming nature soon made her feel quite at home and the result was spectacular - the photos are amazing and completely priceless. We have them blown up all over our house and they were fantastic Christmas presents for the grandparents!
Tom really captured our baby girl's beautiful personality - we will definitely make this a yearly visit to ensure we will always have captured a permanent picture of our kids growing up - thank you Tom!

Our photo session with Tom was such a memorable experience. We were greeted with a lovely warm smile and welcome into Tom's home. Tom had such a great way with Kara and she was so relaxed and happy for the sitting, we have such beautiful photos that we will treasure forever.
