Australia allows only a migration lawyer or migration agent to provide migration assistance, advice and consultation. Lawyers providing immigration advice MUST be admitted to practice law in the State they practice in and MUST hold a legal practicing certificate. Migration Agents are only required to register with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) ("Migration Agent").
Lawyers are required to undertake a minimum 4 year Bachelor of Laws Degree, as well as post graduate diploma and training prior to being admitted as a solicitor, whereas a Migration Agent only has to undertake a 6-month migration course to become a migration agent.
