The art of karate (kara - empty, te - hand) was developed in Okinawa, an island off Japan. It was originally practiced by monks to develop their mental and physical strength, and maintain good health. After occupying Japanese forces banned the carrying of weapons by the natives of Okinawa, the Okinawans were forced to learn to defend themselves with their hands only, hence the name 'karate' or 'empty hand'.
